Media Release - Council Stealth in Action

Southern Beaches Conservation Society Dump the Toxic Dump 10 Provence Drive Carlton 7173 MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate Release Sunday 7th July, 2013 Council Stealth in Action The Hazardous waste landfill proposed by Southern Waste Solutions (SWS) for Tasmania’s south-east may not have received Federal funding, but there is a new and unexpected twist to this saga; a zoning change. If locals were upset about lack of consultation prior to the hazardous waste cell permit being granted, then they will be furious when they discover their council has just sold out the region to a waste dump future. Once again ignoring the views of its own electorate, Sorell Council is rushing through a zoning change for the entire 707 hectare site within days. Changing the zone from Rural to Utility will consign the whole site to a waste dump for generations to come. Aware this change will not have community support, Council has come up with another way; Step 1 - immediately create and operate an Interim Utility Zone, but promise residents they will have 1 year to submit comments. Step 2 - after 1 year of using it for Utility purposes, simply convert it to full Utility zoning because a precedent of use will already have been set. Step 3 - Sorell municipality becomes Tasmania’s wasteland - the inconvenient electorate will just have to lump it. It is a sneaky way of going about business, but one Sorell Council, part owner of SWS, has no qualms with. Can Council and the State Government honestly look this community in the eye and say “We have fully informed you this landfill will become the waste dump for all of southern Tasmania.” ? This consultation simply has not happened, yet submissions for the interim rezoning close in just 5 days. -- MEDIA RELEASE ENDS -- For further information, please contact Dump the Toxic Dump: dumpthetoxicdump@gmail.com Claire Burnet on 0448 585 947
