Letter writing key points

Letter writing.to Regional Development Australia Fund 5 member Panel and to Simon Crean

Contents of letter need to include:

1. Lack of community consultation by SWS and Councils only statutory
requirements fulfilled. Landfill Sustainability Guide 2004 pL7
recommends much broader community consultations. Especially
considering the C cell will take waste from the whole state and from
Antarctica.

2. Community formed DTTD / SBCS and implemented a Petition,
accepted by Sorell Council as valid on 5 Oct 20L2.ln just under one
month over 20 per cent of the Sorell community signed the Petition
against the C cell.

3. Tasman Council as the Proponent is a minority joint owner (8%) of
the Copping site but the Site does not sit within Tasman Municipality,
therefore does not have responsibility should anything happen to the
C cell. This would be the responsibility of Sorell ratepayers.

4. The proposal is in direct opposition to the National Waste
Management Policy 2009 - where landfill is the least desirable.

5. The State Government is advocating for the C cell (it is already
mentioned in their Economic Development Plan 2012), encouraging
the use of landfill over remediation to go ahead by not introducing a
prohibitive per tonne hazardous waste levy as in other states.

6, Urge the Panel member / or Simon Crean to read the SBCS  'A Better Waste Management Future for Tasmania' .

7. Call on the Panel member etc. not to consider the Tasman application
as it does not meet the Criteria or to request Tasman withdraw their
application on the-grounds that it does not meet the round 4
Guidelines Criteria 5 Evidence of Community Support.
