Legacy mine tailing dams - dirty water in Tasmania
Download and listen to RN Background Briefing Sun 31 Mar. 2013, to find out how many towns in Tasmania where you can't drink the water! Mostly this is from old mine tailing dams which have not been cleaned up. Mineral's Tasmania say they only have $150,000 to clean up/rehabilitate the Royal George mine site - a 'drop in the ocean!' Dorset Council have 23 towns that do not have potable water. It took along time before Ben Lomond Water advised this - Dorset Council did not tell the community. Tasmania has safe blood levels of lead as 10 micrograms per..world level is 5 micrograms. Dr Allison Bleeney from St Helens asks why? Clean Green Tasmania - just a cover -up. The same will happen to the Carlton River if hazardous waste is buried in a C cell!

Bigger Than Tasmania - we've got to stop this!
Check out these web sites. Our Federal and State Government just don't want to know. We have to shame them into taking notice.
and yet it is possible look at the site below!
and yet it is possible look at the site below!
We need to make Government see that toxic waste means business and not bury. There are companies who make money out of remediation, recycle and reuse but not if tip fees are so low (as in Tasmania), that its not economically expedient.

Letter writing key points
Letter writing.to Regional Development Australia Fund 5 member Panel and to Simon Crean
Contents of letter need to include:
1. Lack of community consultation by SWS and Councils only statutory
requirements fulfilled. Landfill Sustainability Guide 2004 pL7
recommends much broader community consultations. Especially
considering the C cell will take waste from the whole state and from
Antarctica.
2. Community formed DTTD / SBCS and implemented a Petition,
accepted by Sorell Council as valid on 5 Oct 20L2.ln just under one
month over 20 per cent of the Sorell community signed the Petition
against the C cell.
3. Tasman Council as the Proponent is a minority joint owner (8%) of
the Copping site but the Site does not sit within Tasman Municipality,
therefore does not have responsibility should anything happen to the
C cell. This would be the responsibility of Sorell ratepayers.
4. The proposal is in direct opposition to the National Waste
Management Policy 2009 - where landfill is the least desirable.
5. The State Government is advocating for the C cell (it is already
mentioned in their Economic Development Plan 2012), encouraging
the use of landfill over remediation to go ahead by not introducing a
prohibitive per tonne hazardous waste levy as in other states.
6, Urge the Panel member / or Simon Crean to read the SBCS 'A Better Waste Management Future for Tasmania' .
7. Call on the Panel member etc. not to consider the Tasman application
as it does not meet the Criteria or to request Tasman withdraw their
application on the-grounds that it does not meet the round 4
Guidelines Criteria 5 Evidence of Community Support.

Don't cop out in Copping, Kelly-Jo's song to Dump the Dump
Kelly-Jo Ostermann sang her great Dump the Dump song, Don't cop out in Copping, at the opening and closing of the rally and launch of the SBCS Report. Her song made the event so much more vivid and alive. If anyone can make a recording of this song with Kelly-Jo for Utube please get in touch.
